About REMBI

One of the most challenging phases of real estate yesterday which still remains the unsolved problem of today is how to successfully manage subsidized housing in the growing metropolitan areas. This fact was recognized many years ago by the board of directors of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB). Later the need for successful management of subsidized housing led to the formation in 1968 of an affiliate arm of the national body to deal with the whole concept of preservation of property, landlord-tenant relationship and economic analysis of managing conventional as well as subsidized real property.

In nearly all of our larger cities, more housing units were being lost through abandonment and mismanagement then those being added through new construction and rehabilitation. In view of this fact, the NAREB Board of Directors appointed a committee at the convention held in St. Louis, MO to study and formulate plans for a new affiliate group to deal with the aforementioned problems. The committee members were:

George W. Craig, Esq. -- Chicago Willis P. Carson--Los Angeles
Jess Gill, --Chicago William Hamilton, --Cleveland
Albert H. Johnson, -- Chicago William Lynch, --- Chicago
Ripley B. Mead, Jr.-- Chicago Dr. Booker T. McGraw--Wash., DC
Q. V. Williamson, -- Atlanta

Albert H. Johnson was selected as Chairman of this committee. The first meeting was held in Chicago November 1968. During this meeting, the foundation was laid. The members felt it essential to integrate the training for ethical and social responsibilities, good tenant management relationship and proper maintenance of the product. The committee readily agreed upon the development of a course criterion of urban redevelopment, personnel selection and training, management procedures, tenant and public relations, real estate economics, merchandising and management's role. They agreed to provide all students successfully completing the first course with a Certification called "Certified Resident Manager" (CRM). Upon the completion of course II, students would receive a higher designation to be known as Certified Real Estate Manager (CREM). As the committee continued planning, the name Real Estate Management Brokers Institute (REMBI) was recommended, approved and adopted. REMBI was incorporated January 6, 1970.
